Truthfully, I never intended to start my career in accounting. I had never experienced any business class before starting university, so I started my college career not even thinking about an accounting degree. However, fate works in mysterious ways, and while I was taking various classes to decide what I wanted to major in, I was immediately drawn to accounting. As I took more accounting classes, I knew that I had made the right decision in changing my major. My accounting professors have been outstanding and engaging, incorporating their work experience and research knowledge into their lectures and assignments. The summer of my junior year in college, I interned in New York City with KPMG in their International Tax Group. After having a fantastic internship experience, I was extended a full-time offer after I finished my Master’s degree. I eagerly accepted this offer. I graduated from the University of Georgia in May 2015 with Accounting and International Business Majors, a Chinese Minor, and a Certificate in Personal and Organizational Leadership. I am currently completing my Master’s in Accountancy, Specialization in Tax at the University of Georgia. I have successfully passed all four parts of the CPA exam! During my master’s program, I am working as a graduate assistant, where I help professors in grading assignments, proctoring exams, and teaching students. In addition, I am able to help my professors with their research. Being a graduate assistant revealed to me that I love teaching and helping others learn. Furthermore, it has sparked my interest in research. However, whenever I am not preparing for classes or attending to my graduate assistant duties, I am usually at the gym working out or breakdancing.
After graduating with my Master’s, I will move to New York to start my career. Beyond working at KPMG, I am unsure of what the future has in store for me. I know that I love accounting, so I may end up staying in public accounting or pursuing a PhD in accounting. Although I do not know what the future has in store for me, I know that I will strive to continue learning and bettering myself so I can reach my full potential.
